Agalakada Sri Dhammarakkhita Vihara gg

This Vihara is located 5.5 km away from Akuressa on the AkuressaMakandara road. Situated in a beautiful rural village in the Talahagama area, this temple was constructed by Rev. Agalakada Sri Dhammarakkhita, who was the first monk from the Southern Province to obtain 'Upasampada' or Higher Ordination from Rev. Welivita Sri Saranankara, during the reign of King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe in the late 18th century.

This temple was one of the earliest constructions during the revival of Buddhism under royal patronage. The view of this temple has been obscured by the bigger and larger temples of a later period. Originally, there had been a temple on pillars. The short granite pillars on which this temple stood still remain in the surrounding area.

There is a small image house with Kandy period paintings still at this temple. The image house has some beautiful paintings requiring early conservation. The residence of the monks at the temple is more than 100 years old. There are many ola leaf manuscripts at the temple, which is another indication of the temple's antiquity and its connection with the Buddhist revival under Rev. Welivita Sri Saranankara.
