To reach Alawathura Ganegoda Rajamaha Viharaya, one must travel from Avissawella toward Bulathkohupitiya, turning right from Ruwanwella at a secondary road. The site is located at a distance of 4 km from the Bulathkohupitiya - Kegalla road, in the village of Alawatura in the Divisional Secretariat of Bulathkohupitiya, Beligala Korale in the Kegalla district.

There are some views about the beginning of this temple. According to popular belief is that this temple was built during the Valagamba period. However, according to archaeological evidence, it was built by a sanga named Dharmakeerthi in the Gampola period.

It seems that the Ganegoda temple has been built according to South Indian architecture by studying the ruins that can be seen here. Even though there were factors that could be thought to be a three-story prasadam at first, we can see a small temple now.

In the 1890s. H.C.P Bell has included a detailed report about this temple in the Kegalu Korala report. But many parts of the temple he describes are not seen today. These parts could often be destroyed over time.

This temple can be reached by walking along with the steam where the 250 step staircase starts with this waterway. The temple is built on a black stone stage on the left side of the rock with a 14 feet gate and an 18½ feet exterior pavilion. The rest of the Piyassa Dwara Mandapa and the temple is made from a single beam and covers the Vihara. According to Mr Bell, this temple is one of a kind in the Kegalle district.
