Atadahewatta Walawwa

According to available historical sources, this house was originally used by the Obeysekere family and is now owned by the members of the Jayawardena family. The name Atadahewatta has been derived from the 8000 coconut trees planted on the land where the house is located. It is said that the house had been originally built in 1625, subjected to several subsequent modifications and renovated in 1944.

The front veranda, which is one of the outstanding features of the Valauva, consists of an inner row of tall wooden columns and an outer facade with masonry arches.

Large doors and windows and internal courtyards are important features of the building. The gable roof is covered with half-round clay tiles. There is a special water supply system for the bathrooms. The house is fairly well maintained by the family members.

Location: The building is located 100m on the by-road, off the Kathaluwa junction on the Colombo-Matara main road.
