Baobab Tree - Delft Island.

A short distance from the Delft Jetty along the main road to the South, a road branching to the right leads to the Baobab tree adjoining the Kamanvilappukulam freshwater body. Arab merchant calling at the delft harbour has propagated this in Delft to provide food for their horses and camels being transported for sale in their ships. The tree which is found in the African savannas has leaves spreading out like the fingers of a human hand. The leaves and the fruits of the tree are relished by herbivores animals. This tree is not indigenous to Sri Lanka. The tree is found in Pallimunai and Talaimannar in the Mannar peninsula. Its branches spread over a large area, and in some instances, large hollows do appear within its trunk. The hollows could be so large that a group of people could assemble in them. The growth of this tree is about 50 feet. Their general life spans exceed five thousand years. This particular Baobab tree is declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Department.

The Baobab Tree found in the area called Kavolaiyampalai in the Grama Niladhari Wasama No. J/6, Delft-East of the Divisional Secretary's Division, Jaffna District, Northern Province.

The site was designated as an Archaeological Protected Monument by Government Gazette notification No 1716 published on 22 July 2011
