Travel across the Benthara Bridge on the Colombo-Galle Main Road 1 km from Kahambiliyakanda Junction on the Elpitiya Road. Then another 2 km, you will reach Arachchimulla Junction. From that junction, take the road to the left for 2 km to reach the Galpatha Rajamaha Vihara.

This temple is located in the village of Kahagalla in the Wadumulla Grama Niladhari Division No. 03, Hungamthota in the Benthara Divisional Secretariat Division. The vihara history dates back to the 'Saddhatissa Kingdom' period. According to the Mahavamsa, King Saddhatissa and his entourage went to the Bentota Vihara in Pasdunrata, knowing that one of the relics of the Mahakashyapa Thero was residing at Pasdunrata. There is also chronological evidence that during the Polonnaruwa period, a Neralu garden was made and offered to the Vihara. It is believed that this temple was one of the octogenarian institutions accepted by the royal standard during the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa periods.

According to Pujavaliya, a coconut garden was offered to the Galpatha temple in Benthara, Kalutara, during the reign of Parakramabahu 11th of the Dambadeniya era.

The inscription to the right of the rock at the entrance to the temple mentions a land donation and staff made to the temple by a government official named Kahambalkulu Mindalna, a Tamil superintendent who controlled the Pasdun Korale. According to the name of the Minister and the archaeological evidence, Mr Paranavithana suggests that it belongs to the era of Parakramabahu I.
