Bingiriya Tampita Vihara is located in the Kurunegala District. The gravel path that leads to the Tampita Vihara begins from Hettipola - Chilaw main road.

The Tampita Vihara is situated on flat land between the river Daduru and Kolomunn Oya, which had their tributaries from ancient times spreading in various directions. Thus the land had been fertile. Chilaw (Salapura) served as a small port in ancient times and was a busy trade centre.

The ancient caravan route from the port to the island's interior (Pauduvasnuwara & other cities) crossed the Bingiriya village, which is said to be a resting place for travellers.

According to the oral traditions, the temple's history goes beyond the Kandyan era, and a King named Aggrabodhi had established a monastic tower at this site. King Parakramabahu I had renovated the temple buildings when he was developing the agricultural activities in the region as the provincial ruler. However, the image house on pillars in the temple would have taken its present form in the Kandyan period.

Bingiriya tempita vihara is considered to be the most prominent image house of this type on the island. It consists of two floors, the ground levels mainly used for the congregation and the upper level as the shrine room. The upper floor rests on 23 stone pillars.

There are two stairways for devotees to ascend and descend on the two sides of the building. The upper floor walls, both the interior and exterior faces, are fully decorated with paintings. In addition to the main door, there are two other small doors on the east and west sides, which allows the penetration of natural light into the shrine room.
