BOGODA TAMPITA VIHARAYA

Bogoda Tampita Vihara is situated off Kurunegala - Puttlam road, about 6 Km away from Mahakeliya junction.

The temple is located near the Bogoda lake on its bank. It is believed that the image house was built in the Kurunegala period, though there is no historical evidence to prove it.

The fountain in the temple premises has an exciting story behind it. It is believed that Prince Sapumal bathed and rests at this particular fountain (named "Rajapihilla" after that) before he left for the war in Jaffna.

The rectangular-shaped of Bogoda Tampita Vihara stands on twelve stone pillars.

The columns with beautiful carvings are some of the visible evidence of its glorious history. The engraved human faces on the column heads (Pekadas) are a unique decorative element.

The roof remains of its original form. There had been no significant renovations recently as the structure is substantially strong.
