Boltumbe Saman Devale

Boltumbe Saman Devale is located 13 km from the Ella-Arawa junction on the Pinnawela road linked to the Balangoda-Badulla road.

Tradition records that during the days of Rajasinghe I (1593-1618 AD), the King had located four other devales dedicated to deity Saman as sub-devales of the main Saman Devale at Siri Pada at Alutnuwara (Mahiyangana), Boltumbe, Ratnapura and Deraniyagala. The intention of the King was to utilise these devales to protect the treasures of the main Saman devale during the period of distress. During the Portuguese destruction of Saman Devale in Rathnapura, valuables had been taken away and deposited the Boltumbe Devale in 1616.

Boltumbe Devale is the venue of an annual procession in August conducted over a period of 5 days with the associated pageants. The very close link between Boltumbe Devale and Saman Devale at Ratnapura is supported by contemporary literary evidence.
