Bundala is the most significant wetland sanctuary outside the Northern Province and the first sanctuary on the Island to get Ramsar Status. Bundala is well-known for its variety and wealth of aquatic birdlife, which feeds on the rich harvest provided by the many lagoons located within the park. The park covers about 6000 hectares of brackish lagoons, salt pans, inter-tidal mudflats and thorny scrub jungle.
