Buttala Happoruwa Purana Viharaya

Ancient Stupa at the Happoruwa Purana Viharaya Built during king Devanapiyatissa era (250-210 BC)

According to historical records, when the sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi of India was planted in Anuradhapura Mahamevuna Uyana, eight offshoots sprung from it, and they were planted in various locations throughout the country. Four offshoots sprung from each of the eight trees, and these 32 offshoots were again distributed to various parts of the country. The first eight trees are known as ‘Ashtapala Maha Bodhi’, and the next 32 is known as ‘Dethispala Maha Bodhi’. One of these 32 Bodhi’s 0ne was planted at the Buttala Happoruwa Purana Vihara. Thus the Bodhi tree at Happoruwa is thought to be over 2000 years old.

In addition to the Bodhiya, you will also see ruins of an ancient stupa Tampita Viharaya at the temple has been declared as a protected archaeological monument in 2002

The temple lies 2.5 km from Buttala town on the Buttala road.
