Nuwaragala kanda

There are three routes leading to the site. One route is along the Matale Dambulla road passing Lenadora, travelling 25 km beyond the Minneriya route, 6 km. away from Alakolawewa. The second route is along the Dambulla-Kandalama road travelling 16 km. The third route is along Dambulla—Sigiriya road, 12 km from Kimbissa junction.

Nuwaragala Kanda serves as a boundary separating Matale District from Tamankaduwa (Polonnaruwa) District. There is a belief that King Mahasen (275 - 302) resided temporarily when constructing the Minneriya tank. The ruins at Nuwaragala Kanda are grouped under three categories.

Irrigation works

The foundation measures 15 meters x 11.4 meters. (50’ x 38’). Broken pillar heads, ancient square bricks are considered the ruins of the building occupied by the king and his entourage. There are three ruins considered as belonging to a monastic complex together with flower altars. There are also ruins of 3 tanks and the canals connected to them at this site. The streams in the vicinity had been used to feed Kiri Oya, located close to Aloka wewa. Kiri Oya was the main source of water supply for the Minneriya tank. The ruins scattered over a large extent of land testify to the vastness and historicity of Nuwaragala Kanda.
