Dharmaraja College - Kandy

Early Education in Sri Lanka was conducted in schools affiliated with Christian Missionaries. Since the arrival of the famous American Theosophist Henry Steele Olcott, there was a Buddhist renaissance, which led to the setting up of Buddhist schools. The Kandy Buddhist High School was set up in

1887 in a cadjan shed in the Natha Devala premises with 12 students. It was shifted later to its spacious premises near the Dalada Mdligdwa and was renamed Dharmaraja. Its motto was 'Attahi Attano Natho' (One is one's leader).

The school was fortunate to receive the guidance of 21 dedicated principals responsible for the steady progress of Dharmardaja. Among them were Sir D. B. Jayatilake, a scholar who spearheaded the nationalist movement in the country (1890-1898), Mr K.N. Billimoria (1902-1932), Mr P. de S. Kularatne (1932-1936), Mr L.H. Mettananda (1936-1948). Their memories are cherished to date. Dharmaraja had very close links with Ananda College, Colombo, the leading Buddhist school. Many of the principals of Ananda were drawn from Dharmaraja.

The school has classes from Grade 1 to Grade 13 at primary, post-primary and secondary levels providing education in all streams, Science, Mathematics, Arts, Commerce and Agriculture. A very high percentage of student admission to the University from Dharmardaja has brought fame to the school. Over 30 sports societies provide opportunities to the students to gain competence in sports and athletics. Having gained the national challenge flag in the scout movement for three consecutive years earlier, Dharmaraja has maintained that position from 1993 up to date.
