This vihdra is situated on a rock surface in Doragamuwa within Pallegampaha korale. The site can be reached by travelling along Kandy Alawatugoda road and proceeding a distance of 5 kilometres along the DoragamuwaWattegama road, taking the turn at Kudugala junction. The last lap of the route is along a road behind the Doragamuwa sub post office, an ascent to the mountain.

The jungle close to the cave had later been converted to a village, and the area had been named Doragamuwa subsequently. The Tampita vihara has been constructed on a foundation laid on the summit of the mountain. The vikdra has been erected on 4 tall pillars after placing wooden beams over them. It measures 4.62 metres (15 ft. 3 inches) in length and 3.08 metres (10 ft. 7 inches) in width. Walls have been done by using wattle and daub.

The Suvisi Vivaranaya (24 predictions), which served as a popular theme in Kandyan paintings, had been drawn in the inner walls. Paintings of Bo-trees enhance the scenery drawn on the outer walls. Jataka stories such as Télapatta, Vessantara have been drawn in the Kandyan style. The suppression of Mara is a Significant painting. Doragamuwa tampita-vihara is one of the surviving tampita-vihdras in the Kandy district.
