Completed in 1905, the building is in a Hindu Saracenic style and is a copy of the central portion of the Kuala Lumpur municipality buildings. The wards were almost 5 m high, and portraits of Queen Victoria and Lady Ridgeway were hung in the main hall. As the number of patients grew, the hospital could no longer accommodate them, and the present-day eye hospital next door is very much a shadow of its predecessor.

The old building cannot be visited but, to have a good view from the outside, go to the pavement beside the Baptist Church, near Cinnamon Garden's post. The Eye Hospital is located at De Soysa (Lipton's) Circus, the roundabout near Town Hall where the roads of Union Place, Ward Place, Deans Road, Dharmapala Mawatha
