Meegaaman/ Meekaman Dutch Fort - Delft Island.

Meegaaman Fort was built during the Portuguese/Dutch period is located behind the Delft Hospital and on its premises. After overthrowing the Portuguese, the Dutch took it over and added a barracks to it nearby. The fort, which is 30 m long and 26m wide, has walls of a thickness of about 2m. Its height at its least damaged point is 6m. The fort, which may have had 2 or 3 floors according to the available evidence, has in its ground floor small rooms that could be conjectured as prison cells. A flight step seems to have existed to reach the first floor. This floor has a lookout room from which the sea could be observed through an opening. The structure is built of coral stones.

Delft Island Fort also known as Meekaman/Meegaman Fort in the area called Seekiriyampallam situated in the Grama Niladhari Wasama No. fma/3 Delft Central in the Delft Divisional Secretary’s Division, Jaffna District, Northern Province.

The site was designated as an Archaeological Protected Monument by Government Gazette notification. No: 1739 published on 30 December 2011
