The Gallows

The Gallows, situated at the southern tip of Tower Hill, was used during the British period in Hambantota. Some locals say that these were not the Gallows but a flag post, which used to help the sailors find their direction. There is no evidence to support this theory. There are records to say that the Government Agent of Hambantota, Leonard Woolf, used the gallows. An oak pillar, which gradually thins out at the top, fixed to an iron base, serves as the Gallows post.

A fence around the gallows was used to control the spectators. Leonard Woolf has watched the Government Agent's residence hangings, which is situated north of the Gallows.
