Getambe Ferry

In the past, there were four ferries to enter the city of Senkadagala. They were located at Getambe, Katugastota, Watapuluwa and Léwella. Those reaching from the direction of Satara Koralé had to cross the ferry at Getambe. This is also known as the Gannoruwa ferry in some documents. The water cutting ceremony at the conclusion of the Esala Perahera takes place at this spot. Hence, this ferry is known as the Getambe water cutting ferry.

The Bo-tree and the Vihara can be seen at a place close to the intersection of Kandy Peradeniya road with William Gopallawa Mawata in Kandy. A mango tree with knotty branches close to the ferry influenced the formation of the name Getambe. King Wimaladharmasiriya II had caused the conduct of the higher ordination of

Buddhist monks brought to the country from Rakkhahanga (Myanmar) at this ferry.
