Girls High School - Kandy

Girls High School was established by Reverend Samuel and Mrs Langdon in May 1819, at the Wesleyan School Chapel, Katukele. Having moved to various places since its establishment, High School was finally set up at the present premises in October 1920 under the guidance of its Principal Miss. Jane Green.

As a Missionary school, the task entrusted was to train young women for new ventures to serve the needs of the changing society to promote knowledge of world culture through English education.

Girls' High School proudly claims many firsts to her credit.

The first Girl Guide Company in Sri Lanka was formed in 1917 at this school.

The schoolhouse system, the school uniform, the school time, and the school badge were introduced to the island's educational system by High School in the years 1921 and 1922.

Miss Soma Seneviratne graduated in 1927 was the first Kandyan Lady Graduate and the first to win the Tripos of the Cambridge University. She introduced domestic science in 1921 and Kandyan dancing in 1952 to the school curriculum.

Girls High School today proudly claims to be one of the best schools on the island. It provides academic guidance to around 3,500 children in both Sinhala and Tamil mediums.
