The Residence of the Government Agent and the stables

This British period building was constructed more than 100 years ago as the Official Residence for the Government Agent. Mr Leonard Woolf, Assistant Government Agent of Hambantota and the famous author of 'Village in the Jungle', occupied this Residence in 1908. This building has undergone many changes through the years. However, the front entrance, the high roof, and the basic structure of the house remain unchanged. The verandahs have been enclosed with doors and windows added with time. The walls are strong and are at least 12 inches in thickness. The back of the house faces the sea. It is still the official Residence of the District Secretary.

The stables were an essential part of the Residence before the use of automobiles. Leonard Woolf, in his diaries, records that most of his journeys were on horseback. This large and airy building with a verandah was divided into stalls and is now used by minor employees of the District Secretariat.

Government Agent's Office (District Secretariat)

Constructed 100 years ago and is presently used as the District Secretariat. The front remains unchanged with its majestic Doric pillars of the verandah. Originally, this verandah extended all around the Government Agent's office building, but now the verandah pillars are connected with walls to provide more space for the District Secretariat. This building has a wide verandah around it. The high roof and the thick walls keep the building cool.
