Hatagala Rajamaha Vihara

The location of this Vihara is 1 km away from Hungama bazaar towards Tissamaharama on the MataraHambabtota road. This ancient temple is one of the few temples in the Southern Province where the image house is built on pillars.

There is a document in 1795 which States that this temple was constructed with the help of the villagers, and no animal could be killed within view of the temple. There is also a document (Sannasa) which states that King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe presented this temple to Rev. Wagegoda Indasara. The roof of the image house on pillars had been tiled with Kandy period tiles by the Archaeological Department.

The paintings of this temple date from the Kandy period. This temple on pillars contains only one room surrounded by a verandah. There are wooden pillars on stone pillar bases supporting the roof, and a wooden railing surrounds the verandah.
