Hotel Suisse

Situated along the circular road around the Kandy lake Hotel Suisse is one of the oldest and most picturesque hotels in Kandy. The chief minister of the Granary used this building during the Kandyan administration. After the British occupation in 1815, ownership of the building changed in 1818 when it was acquired by the British Army for the commanding officer and was named "Haramby House".

Subsequently, it was bought by a planter's wife, a Swiss lady, who converted it to a residential hotel named Hotel Suisse. During the second world war (1943 - 1945), it became the residence of Lord Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Commander. He was operating from Sri Lanka as the chief of the allied forces in South-East Asia. The present Mount Batten Suite of the Hotel was his residence.

He had his headquarters in the Royal Botanical gardens at Peradeniya and used to commute to Colombo frequently in a special train. After a brief use of the premises by the Education Department, it was reverted to its original use as a hotel. It has 100 large rooms with all amenities with a swimming pool, conference halls and a helipad. The large dining hall, whose roof is supported by very long beams without columns, is notable.
