The 5.4-meter Reclining Buddha at Kandegama

The Kandegama hill lies 11.37 kilometres away on the turn-off to the right at the 44th milepost on the Manampitiya-Batticaloa Road. In an upper cave on the hill is an a5.4 meter reclining statue of the Buddha destroyed by treasure hunters. This statue is made of bricks and clay-like, the one in the cave above the Pidurangala temple in Sigiriya. There are other caves on the hill, mostly at the base, with drip-ledges, some hBrahmibrahmi scripts belonging to the 3” century B.C. Among the caves is a collapsed stupa. The ruins show that there had been a monastery here at one time.

The road to the cave with the Buddha statue lies by the notice board that proclaims the hill as a nature reserve. There are two other caves on either side, and the smaller one on the left has a figure of Bahirava.
