Karambagala Hermitage

This is situated next to the Madunagala Hermitage on top of a rock inselberg. The earliest reference to this temple was in the 5th century AD when the author of the book 'Vishuddhi Magga' refers to it as a 'Kurandaka' cave temple with paintings. A story associated with this Hermitage is as follows - 'Some monks who were on a pilgrimage had seen the paintings at this cave temple and had praised the beauty of the paintings to the monk who lived there for 60 years, but he replied that until the visiting monks showed the paintings, he had never noticed them'. The name, 'Ka', 'Kurandaka', etc., refers to a thorny tree that could be found in this area. Art historians believe that the paintings at Karambagala had been done in the 3rd century BC.
