Kasagala Rajamaha Vihara

This ancient Vihara is situated 8 km away from Ranna on the RannaWeeraketiya road. There are different opinions regarding the name 'Kasagala'. Some think it took its name from the hue of the robes of the large fraternity of monks who lived in its precinct. A second-century inscription at Kasagala Viharaya calls the temple 'Kacagala'. The temple was first restored by Regional King Dappula (circa 659 AD) of Ruhuna and again by King Vijayabahu [ (1055-1110) during the lith century AD.

This temple is built on a terrace constructed with large granite boulders; the remains of many buildings can be seen on this terrace. The stupa at this temple which is built on the rock can be seen from afar.

The ancient image house at Kasagala contains Kandy period paintings. The ceiling paintings especially contain a mixture of traditional Kandyan style and the coastal tradition influenced by the Europeans.
