Four Dévalas

Near the Maligawa are four ancient dévalas or temples dedicated to deities Natha, Visnu, Skanda and Pattini. Another dévdla devoted to the elephant-headed Hindu deity, Ganesha, is located at Katukele.

Kataragama Devalaya of Kandy

The original Kataragama Wevale was constructed during the reign of king Bhuvanekabahu IV (1341 -51). The present Kataragama Devale was constructed during a later period.

The building, erected on a raised stone platform, reflects Kandyan architectural features. The narrow wooden collonaded veranda creates a walkway around the building. The pitched roof is covered with half-round clay tiles. The building consists of two major parts, a drumming hall and the devale (shrine of gods of the Buddhist pantheon). The Department of Archaeology has replaced the roof tiles and wooden beams. The building is in good condition.

Location: The devale is located about 1.5km from Gampola town off the Gampola-Nawalapitiva road.
