Katarangala-vihara

This Vihara is situated in Pallegama within Kulugamanasiya pattuwa. After proceeding a distance of 5 kilometres along the road from Peradeniya—Katugastota via Gannoruwa to Halloluwa junction, Katarangala vihara is met with a short distance along Barigama road to the left. Halloluwa referred to in the Saddharmdlankdraya, has been identified as the Katarangala vihara.

The history of the Vihara dates back to the Anuradhapura period. During the Kandy period, the text titled Vimana Watuprakaramana has been translated into Sinhala by a monk named Venerable Gammulla Ratnapala, who had lived in this Vihara. This place has gained additional recognition due to preserving a golden image brought from Devanagala in Mawanella. Although the image was robbed several times, it has been recovered and is kept in the Vihara.

The ancient cave has been converted into the Vihara and has been embellished with sculptures and paintings during the Kandy period. There was a miniature dagaba within the Vihara which had been shifted to an outside location later. The ancient Bo-tree is not found now. A new Bo-tree can be seen at this place. Among the other objects of worship are a flower altar and an impression of a footprint of the Buddha.

The Buddha shrine belonging to Kattarangala ancient vihara premises situated in the Grama Niladhari Division of Halloluwa in Harispattuwa Divisional Secretary’s Division, in Kandy District, Central Province The site was designated as an Archaeological Protected Monument by Government Gazette notification. No: 1553 published on 6 June 2008.
