Kengalla Ambalama

Kengalla Ambalama (resting place) is believed to have been built in 1905 by a wealthy businessman, Karaithylingam Pillai, a migrant from South India.

The ambalama is different in form from the traditional resting place. It consists of an entrance porch and a resting area. The resting area is at two levels. The middle section is at a higher level and is said to have been used by people of the privileged caste. The ambalama is constructed of stone. Initially, the roof was supposed to have been of half-round tiles. Later these have been replaced by Calicut tiles. The floor is cement rendered. The ambalama, though neglected, is architecturally distinct. It is at present used by people as a waiting place for buses.

Location: The ambalama is situated in Kengalla town, about 10km from Kandy city on the Kandy-Mahiyangana road.
