The most important Buddhist temple in Rambukkana is the Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe Rajamaha Vihara. Both lay students and monks can receive education at the Vihara's Maha Pirivena.

The Kandyan Buddhist renaissance has a tight relationship with the Vihara. The Rev. Kadiragoda Medhankare, a member of the group led by Welivita Sri Saranankara Upali Thera, is credited with starting the current Vihara. He brought higher ordination from Siam, created the sima (restrictions for monastic ceremonies) at this temple, and gave higher ordination to ten monks. However, according to mythology, this temple's history dates back to King Vijayabahu III (1232–1236), who is thought to have constructed a three-story image house there.
