Image House of Malagammana Rajamaha Vihara, Nugawela

It is said that the image house of the Malagammana temple was built by king Bhuvanekabahu V (1371-1408) during the Gampola period.

The image house consists of an inner chamber and an outer veranda (Atul Kutiya and Pitamalaya). In front of the inner chamber are four carved stone pillars. The external walls of the inner chamber (Atu/ Rutiya) and the outer veranda (Pitamalaya) ate decorated with wood carvings and paintings depicting Angampora (combats in wrestling), jataka stories, Hansa Puttuwa (two sacred geese with necks entwined), Maraparajaya (conquest of mara) and various flowers and trees characteristic of the art of the Kandyan period (15th - 19th century),

Three Kandyan period Buddha images and two images of gods are in the inner chamber. The interior walls and the ceiling also consist of paintings depicting Suvisi Vivaranaya (24 assurances predicting Buddha-hood), Sariyuth and Mugalan Theros, chief disciples of the Buddha, flowers and trees. The image house is located in a traditional arts and crafts village.

Location: The image house is about 600m from Nugawela junction on the Malagammana road, off Kandy-Katugasthota-Mawathagama road.
