Malwatu Maha Viharaya

The Buddhist clergy of Sri Lanka have organized themselves into several sects distinguished by subtle changes in rules of discipline. Of these, the Siamese Sect has the largest number of Buddhist monks and temples under its jurisdiction. The monks, in turn, owe their allegiance to two main Mahaviharas in Kandy, referred to as Chapters of Malwatta and Asgiriya temples.

The site of this Vihara was originally the pleasure gardens of the Kings of Kandy. It served as the venue for the re-establishment of the higher ordination of monks in 1753. This was possible due to the dedicated efforts of Ven. Velivita Saranankara Thero, ably supported by King Kirti Sri Rajasinha, the ruler at the time. Six Buddhist monks received their higher ordination for the first time at the ceremony held on these premises. This Vihara was originally called Dhammikarama. Since the King had established this monastery in the Royal park, it was after that called Pushpadrdma.

In the beginning, there had been only three temples donated to the monks. Those were the Temple of Ven. Velivita Saranankara, the Temple, donated to Ven. Tibbotuwawe Mahanayaka and the Temple donated to Ven. Moratota Dhamma khanda, popularly Moratota Temple or the Middle Temple

At present, there are over sixty temples in this complex. In addition, there are several chambers occupied by the monks. Of them, only one belongs to the community of monks, and the balance is in private ownership. The incumbent Mahanayaka is in charge of the administration of these chambers.

Late Ven constructs an alms hall opposite the Simadmdlaka (premises used for ecclesiastical functions). Sirimalwatte Ananda Mahanayaka.
