New Kathiresan Kovil Bambalapitiva

According to available historical information, about 150 years ago, some wealthy Indian merchants who had settled down in Sri Lanka built this temple as a small shrine with accommodation facilities. The Indian merchants erected this building especially for the benefit of Hindu devotees who used to visit Kataragama very often. Recently this temple was renovated with the use of modern materials, thus deviating from the basic principles of traditional Hindu temple architecture.

The temple complex which faces the west consists of a large spacious hall, in the middle of which is the garbhagruba (inner chamber) where the main deity Ganesh has been installed. The surrounding area is dominated by commercial buildings. Sammangadu Sri Manika Vinaygar temple and New Kathiresan temple are situated within a distance of approximately 50m.

Location: The temple is situated on the landside Galle Road at Bambalanitiva.
