Image house of Niyamgampaya Rajamaha Vihara, Gampola

According to the Niyamgampaya inscription set up by king Vickramabahu IIT of Gampola (1357 -74), Buddhist monks resided in this temple during his reign. A legend refers to Motatissa as the king who erected the temple and donated it to the pupillary succession of bhikkhus (Buddhist monks). The image house had been reconstructed on the original stylobate of the Gampola period made with dressed stones decorated with mouldings and of relief of dancers and musicians.

The edifice is skillfully proportioned both internally and externally. As one enters the stone doorway, the spatial quality of the interior creates a striking impression. Inside the chamber are Bodhisattva figures and a large seated Buddha. On the walls are Kandyan period (15th - 19th Century) paintings. The building is in good condition.

Location: The temple is located on the GampolaNawalapitiya road, 2.5 km from Gampola towards Jayamalpura.
