Peradeniya Old Railway Station

The two-storeyed railway building at Peradeniya was built in1867 in the British period (1815 -1948). It represents a typical railway signal cabin design.

Generally, these buildings have a solid lower level often used as a store. The all-important signal function is operated at the upper level from which the trains approaching the station can be better observed. It has facilities to change the travelling track of a train and to provide signals to engine drivers through signal posts located away from the station through a set of cables connected to the cabin (shunting) room. All these operations were handled manually,

The cabin (shunting) room at Peradeniya junction station was mote important, being the only station on the island which could turn a train 360 degrees by moving forward and backwards.

The station is well maintained by the Railway Department.
