Pidurangala Rajamaha vihara

Pidurangala Rajamaha vihara is situated in very close proximity to the famous Sigiriya rock. There are several pre-Christian inscriptions, which testify to its association as an ancient Buddhist shrine. The present vihara is attributed to King Kashyapa I (475 — 497). It contains a complex of cave temples. The Dagaba at the lower level of the vihara premises has been constructed to an unusual plan. The origin of the name Pidurangala is linked to the folk etymology “Piduran Mila Nindan Gala”. The vihara that is patronized at present is the one located at the lower elevation.

The other vihara at a higher elevation is in a state of disrepair. The other caves have been completely abandoned. The prominent sculpture in the main cave is a reclining Budhha image with a freshwater pond in close proximity. The summit of the rock nearby covers an extent of over ge 2 hectares. A picturesque view of the surrounding area can be obtained from this summit. There is a belief that this vihara served as the main place of worship during King Kashyapa I, who ruled the country from Sigiriya in the 5th century.
