Pigeons Nest Made out of Coral - Delft Island.

Among the ruins found on the land adjoining the District secretaries, Office is a very special creation known as the Pigeons nest. When the Dutch were in full control of the Jaffna peninsula, as mentioned in the historical sources, they used an expedient to send messages between the islands, ships and the mainland by using messenger pigeons. For the exit, arrival and resting of the messenger pigeons, they built this pigeons nest.

The nest has been constructed out of coral. The nest is of a square section of sides 1.6m in length resting on a square pedestal, with 15 pigeon holes on each side. The nest with an overall height of 4m remains unharmed.

The building with the dove cage and the associated building ruins situated in the Grama Niladhari Wasama No. fma/4 Delft Central in the Delft Divisional Secretary’s Division, Jaffna District, Northern Province.

The site was designated as an Archaeological Protected Monument by Government Gazette notification. No: 1739 published on 30 December 2011.
