Queen's Hotel - Kandy

Queen's Hotel is a historical building in the city of Kandy. The original building was constructed to meet the requirements of the British Colonial administration shortly after the fall of Kandy in 1815. The first building complex used by the Government was later transformed as the mess complex of the Ceylon Rifles Regiment, which was named Malabar House in 1840.

Malabar House became a Royal Boarding House. In 1879 the entire complex passed into the hands of a Miss. Piachaud made it a popular spot for the British planters, army officers and visitors to Kandy.

In 1895 Miss Piachaud's Hotel was acquired by Kandy Hotels Company Ltd. while retaining the title as Queen's Hotel. It bears British architectural features of the 19th-century' railway station architecture' with rounded pillars and steel girdles. Ownership of the Hotel passed on to Kandy Hotels Company Limited in 1895. The banquet hall of the present Hotel stands where the original Mess building of the Ceylon Rifles Regiment once stood, while the Royal Boarding House is to its central wing with its wide arches and timber floors. Although many features have been added, subsequently to accommodate the requirements of the Hotel, Queen's Hotel retains its original character with a Kandyan flavour visible in some sections.
