The Royal Palace

The building to the north of the Dalada Maligawa, long and rectangular, is called the Mahawasala. This title for the King’s palace had been in use from the Polonnaruwa period from the time of Parakramabahu I (11531186)

The royal palace in Kandy was constructed by Wimaladharmasiiriya I (1592-1604). The original palace’ had been altered subsequently. The section of the palace facing the Natha-dévdla is considered the older portion of the palace. The symbols of the sun and Moon are engraved in front. During the Carly British period, John D’Oyly, the British Resident OcCupied this as his official residence. Even after his departure, this building had been used as the Official quarters by several Government Agents.

This palace is a modest Construction with thick walls. It is possible that it has been reconstructed several times after it has been damaged repeatedly by invaders.
