The City of Kandy

The city of Kandy is presently the administrative capital of the Central Province. It was also the capital city.

Of the Kandyan Kings (1593 - 1815). The fact that the city was administered by the two Prime Ministers of the last King amply supports the importance attached by the King for the capital city's administration. Protected by nature by the surrounding hills, looped by the Mahaweli river and blessed by natural beauty, Kandy city, which claims a history of over three centuries, had gained fame due to the location of the most revered temple of the Buddhists, the Temple of the Tooth, many other religious shrines close to the King's palace, and the home of famous Kandyan arts and crafts, music and dance. It is noted for the ancient lake at the centre and the salubrious climate. It has been declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO.

The Sacred City of Kandy was appointed the status of World Heritage Site in 1988
