The relatively small yet architecturally impressive St Paul Milagiriya Anglican church at Bambalapitiya dates back to the mid-1800s.

The site was originally home to a Catholic church under Portuguese rule; however, the current building was constructed in the early 20th century in the style of a Greek basilica. The word Milagiryia refers to the saint to whom the original Catholic church was dedicated, Nossa Senhora dos Milagres, Our Lady of Miracles. The Portuguese word Milagres was Sinhalised into Milagiriya, which was the name of the area before it became Bambalapitya. Miracles were said to have occurred because of the Healing Powers of a well located on the site
