The church of St Peter of the Garrison is hidden away near the Colombo harbour next to the Grand Oriental Hotel, Fort. The building dates back to the time of the Dutch when it was used by the governor and saw numerous political functions. During the British rule of Ceylon, it was used briefly as a garrison church before it was consecrated in 1821.

The church has undergone much-needed renovations in recent times, although work is ongoing to maintain this historically important site. It is a very cool and peaceful place and features a wooden altar, stone walls and a number of tombstones of former British residents. Punkalas (pots) in their original 19" century state can be seen in the church.

Next door to the church is the Mission for Seafarers.

Approach: coming out of the Grand Oriental Hotel, turn left and find the St Peter of Garrison Church less than 100 m away.
