The St. Thomas College started in Mutwal in 1851, and the church of Galpalliye Christ (site number 22) was used as the College's chapel. The need for a new chapel arose when the College moved to Mt Lavinia in 1918.

The foundation stone was laid in October 1923, and the chapel consecrated in 1927. Built-in Byzantine style, it has been designed to accommodate about 500 boys. In 1968, an important feature was added, the mural behind the altar. This was painted by a renowned Sri Lankan artist, David Paynter. Besides its undeniable artistic qualities, it probably owes part of its fame thanks to the controversy created by its beardless Christ.
