St. Paul's Church in Kandy

St. Paul's Church is situated within the sacred city area of the Temple of the Tooth.

There had been allegations from the Buddhists about establishing a Church close to the Temple of the Tooth and the Audience Hail. The Church authorities explained that the judges responsible for the administration of justice have to take oaths before the trials, and such a place was necessary for the Christian Judges. The Church was established in 1843 in a land called Alakolamaditta. At the initial stages, there was also a school by the name of St. Paul's College on the Church's premises.

When the land was restricted for the Sacred City and the Temple of the Tooth, the school was moved out and was established at Asgiriya in Kandy. This school is presently known as Wariyapola Sumangala Vidyalaya.
