St. Mary's Church, Kegalle

First constructed in 1852 as a very small shrine and later expanded, the St. Mary's Church in the heart of the Kegalle town is one of the oldest Catholic shrines to be found in the district. Holding pride of prominence amongst religious shrines in the Kegalle town, the St. Mary's School was established in 1867 and affiliated with the shrine to provide education in English and national languages. The Catholics patronized this Church, yet the school welcomed children of all faiths. In 1960 the school was taken over by the Government and today functions as a state school, providing education to several thousands of students living in the district of Kegalle.
