The Buddha Image at the Bahirawa Kanda

The range of mountains to the west of Kandy town is called Bahirawa Kanda. There are several folk traditions about the origin of the name. Bahirawa is considered a spirit controlling mineral resources. It is customary to offer a Bahirawa puja (offerings) at the commencement of new construction. Another belief that the spirit of the deity Siva in his aggressive form was referred to as Bahirawa.

Bahirawa Kanda has gained recognition recently due to the erection of a massive standing Buddha image measuring 25.85 metres (84 ft.) at this site facing the city. Late Venerable Ampitiye Dhammarama is credited with the creation of this sculpture.
