Bentota Udalakotuwa Bodhi Samipa Rajamaha Viharaya

After crossing the Benthara Bridge on the Colombo-Galle main road and coming about 500 meters towards Galle, you can enter the Udakotuwa Bodhisamipa Rajamaha Viharaya by going about 500 meters on the Benthara Government 'Hospital' road to the left of the Hospital Junction.

Located in Udakotuwa village in Pahurumulla No. 01 Grama Niladhari Division of Benthara Divisional Secretariat Division.

This temple is considered to be an ancient site belonging to the ancient Bentota Maha Vihara. The history of the temple dates back to the Anuradhapura period on the basis of genealogical evidence and can be identified as one of the 'Galle' Disache temples mentioned in the Vihara Asna.

The five temples of Galpatha Viharaya, Bodhimaluwa Viharaya, Vanavasa Viharaya, Bem Vehera, Udakotuwa Bodhi Samipa Viharaya are situated on a land area of about three square miles bordered on the west by the Great Ocean and on the north, south and east by the Bentota River and its tributaries. The chronicle states that these five temples may have been one great temple in the past, even though they are separate today. It is clear from the term Bemthota Maha Viharaya. Legend has it that the Udakotuwa Bodhi Samipa Viharaya was used at that time as a monastery to entertain and accommodate visiting monks from far and wide to visit the Bentota Maha Viharaya. The name of this temple is also mentioned in the Nama Potha book.
