Veheragala Rajamaha Viharaya

This archaeological reserve is situated in Veheragala village, Lunugamvehera. The temple occupies a large area of natural rock covering about four acres. The stupa, which dates back to the early Anuradhapura period, was rebuilt in 1956. Of the ruins of monuments scattered all over the rock, three can be identified. The ruins near the present residence of the monks contain bricks, a guard stone, a moonstone, steps, etc. A new image house has been constructed at the top of one of the ruins.

A headless statue of Buddha made of crystalline marble was found here. Ruins of another building, undisturbed so far, can be found near the new image house. The bricks belong to the early Anuradhapura period. There are two inscriptions at this site written in the early Brahmi script. There are about six rock-cut pools of various sizes on this rock. Most of these pools now contain stagnant water, but they must have provided water for the needs of the monks who lived here before.
