Wakirigala Abeysundararama Rajamaha Vihara is situated 4 km on the Wakirigala-Asmadala road, which commences at Ussapitiya junction on Mawanella Aranayaka road.

Vatagiri Pabbata, Niyangampaya, Mayura-padapaya, are some of the ancient names used to identify this Vihara; Wakirigala gained prominence in the 13th century as the temple where Ven. Buddhaputra Thera, the author of Pujavaliya, resided. Since he was also the author of several books on Ayurveda, this Vihara was also known for its contribution to the development of ayurvedic literature.

During the days of King Vijayabahu I, Wakirigala gained prominence as a defence post. This Vihara had received the patronage of several kings during the Kandy period. The ancient shrine room accommodates a seated image in the Samadhi posture and several standing figures. It is richly decorated with paintings done in the sittara tradition of the Kandy period. The bubble-shaped dagoba, which is seen from a distance, adds dignity to the shrine. It is believed that the Pujavaliya was written by the author while residing in a cave situated close by.
