Welangahawatta Sri Dhamajothiyarama Purana Tampita Viharaya

The Sri Dhamajothiyarama Purana Viharaya is situated in the village of Welangahawatta in Matale district and was built during the Kandyan Kingdom.

The Vihara is just 18 km from the town of Matale. from Matale, travel 10 km to Rattota, then take the road toward the village of Welangahawatta, approximate distance is 6 km.

Tempita Vihara (Temple on Pillars) is a unique type of image house found in some Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. These buildings have a distinctive architectural design. In the 17th-19th century, these Tempita Viharas were a popular aspect of many Buddhist temples.

The Tampita Vihara at the temple premises was declared as a protected monument by the government gazette dated 9th September 2011.
