Weragampita Rajamaha Vihara

This Vihara is situated in Weragampita, 3 km away from the Matara Bo-tree. The famous Priest of Matara, Karatota Dharmarama, lived at this temple. He was the one time Chief Monk of Sabaragamuwa and the low country and the Chief Incumbent of Sri Pada or Adam's Peak.

This Vihara is believed to have been constructed during the Kandy period in the late 18th century. The image house belongs to the Kandy period. It is a two-storeyed image house, and there is a staircase to reach the upper level (now closed to the public). Usually, the Kandy period temples look as if they have two levels when looking from the outside. This is because the roof is constructed on two levels, one usually covering the inner chamber with high windows and the other below it surrounding it at a lower level.

The inner chamber statues of the Buddha still retain most of their original appearance.

The outer chamber is in good condition because the Department of Archaeology has recently conserved the paintings.
