Sirimalwatta Ambalama

The Abmalama (resting place) at Sirimalwatta 1s a resting hall that an unknown provincial leader had constructed during King Sri Vickrama Rajasimha (1798-1815). Unfortunately, its original appearance had been altered by later re-construction work.

The plan is almost square, the walls are of wattle and daub, and the roof thatched with cadjan. It was reconstructed around 1936. The hipped roof of the structure is presently covered with half-round tiles. The floor is brick paved and cemented. The roof is supported on 13 wooden columns. It is stated that these columns were taken from an ambalama at Yakgahapitiya that was converted into a library. Seventy-two types of wooden casings can be seen at the ambalama. At present, it is used as a community centre and for diverse activities of the village.

Location: The ambalama is situated about 8km from Kandy town and 1km from Sirimalwatta temple.

The site consists of the Sirimalwaththa Ambalama situated in Grama Niladhari Division, Sirimalwaththa West in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Kundasale in Kandy District in Central Province.

The site was designated as an Archaeological Protected Monument by The Gazette of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. 1960. 25 March 2016.
